Exploring Helles style craft beer
Originating in Germany and the hills of Bavaria, Helles style beer was born out of a desire to drink something less heavy and dark. 'Helles' literally translates in German to 'pale' or 'light', this embodies this stule of craft beer. A lager that is lighter, crisper and more refreshing than other styles of beer.
In 1894, the Spaten Brewery first brewed one of these much loved lagers – they unveiled the world's first Helles Lager, and it was a revelation. Brewed with pale malt and lagered to perfection, this golden elixir captured the hearts and palates of beer drinkers across Bavaria and beyond.
Helles Lager wasn't just a new beer style; it was a revolution. Its radiant golden hue, delicate malt sweetness, and clean, crisp finish marked a departure from the heavy, dark lagers of old. With its smooth drinkability and refreshing character, Helles Lager quickly became the beer of choice for beer lovers and occasional summertime sippers.
As word spread, breweries across Bavaria began crafting their own interpretations of Helles Lager, each one a testament to the region's brewing heritage and ingenuity. From the storied halls of Munich to the quaint villages nestled in the Bavarian countryside, Helles Lager became synonymous with Bavarian beer culture.
Helles Mouth is our take on the Bavarian classic, and a lager we think will become a firm favourite for years to come at St Ives Brewery. Clean, crisp and ultra-refreshing. Here's Callum's tasting notes:
- Appearance: A radiant golden hue, reminiscent of sun-kissed wheat fields.
- Aroma: Subtle notes of freshly baked bread mingle with delicate floral hops, inviting you to take that first, tantalizing sip.
- Taste: Crisp and clean, with a gentle sweetness that gives way to a satisfyingly dry finish. Balanced bitterness dances on the palate, leaving a lingering impression of Bavarian perfection.
