Low-alcohol, or alcohol-free craft beer has really come on in the last few years, really pushing the boundaries of what you can expect from a beer with no booze. Once something that was likely considered not part of craft brewing, or a bit of a gimmick is now one of the fastest-growing categories in brewing. Modern drinkers are keen to experience all the flavours and aromas of craft beer, but with lower alcohol content. For us, the challenge wasn’t whether we should make a low-alcohol beer, but rather when and how to make it to best reflect our brewery in that category.

That’s why Slipway 0.5% IPA wasn’t rushed. It’s our first dip of the toe in this market, so we wanted to be 100% certain is was as it should be.

Using your favourite as a base

Rather than starting from a totally blank canvas, we let what you lot love drive the process. Slipway IPA, our top selling session NEIPA known for its bold tropical aroma, soft mouthfeel, and hazy juiciness would be the muse for Slipway 0.5% IPA. The aim? To ensure that this beer carried that same mouth-watering appearance and delicious taste and aromas.

Slipway 0.5% IPA uses the same hop varieties as its big brother, meaning that you get those familiar bursts of citrus, stone fruit, and gentle pine, just without the alcohol. Achieving that balance meant experimenting, refining, and refusing to release anything that felt like a compromise. The goal was clear, to make a beer that was very obviously a St Ives brewery beer.

The low alcohol segment is on the up

From athletes and sports people, to designated drivers and those simply choosing moderation, the demand for low-alcohol options has soared of late. But at the heart of it, people still want craft. They want that same depth, creativity, and flavour. They don't want something bland or beige.

The growth of the overall low alcohol craft beer sector has been driven by variety, variety that includes plenty of modern style IPAs. Drinkers' lover those fruity and refreshing styles, something that offers a real journey of flavour.

We wanted to join that club, but with a low alcohol craft IPA that met our own exacting standards. Slipway 0.5% IPA is that beer.

Off to flyer

Slipway 0.5% IPA launched a fortnight ago, and the reaction has been amazing. From taproom regulars to online customers, the feedback has been superb, and this makes us very happy.

It’s become a new go-to for those looking to cut back without missing out, and it’s opened the door for us to explore what low-alcohol brewing can really offer. She's refreshing and yellow, and looks delicious when poured.

With the early success of Slipway 0.5% IPA, we’re already considering where we might be able to go next. Other styles, other approaches, all with the same love for the art of brewing. Maybe a lager, or maybe something totally different?

For now, though, we’re delighted to finally offer a beer for everyone.

Slipway 0.5% IPA is here.
