Here at St Ives Brewery, we’ve always been about brewing great craft beer, regardless of style. But sometimes, looking forward means looking back. With Drift, our new Amber Ale, we’re tipping our hats to the more traditional art of English brewing, when the classic amber and brown ales reigned supreme.

In a world of hazy IPAs like Slipway or Alora and experimental sours like That's My Jam, there’s something undeniably comforting about a traditional and well-rounded English amber ale. It's a style of beer that was once the cornerstone of British brewing, it's balanced, malt-forward, and full of character. Amber ales have a long history in England, dating back to the 19th century when advances in malting technology allowed for the production of more consistent and flavourful ales. These beers quickly became a staple in pubs across the country, appreciated for their depth of flavour and sessionable nature. This hasn't changed too much since then, with many household beer names producing well known and well loved amber ales. We figured it was about time we joined in.

Drift is our take on what makes an amber ale great. Rich malt complexity brings notes of toffee, biscuit, and caramel, balanced with a clean, satisfying finish. But what sets Drift apart is our use of Columbus hops. While traditionally used in American-style beers, Columbus lends a gentle earthiness and subtle spice to Drift, complementing its malt depth without overpowering its classic English charm.

Amber ales have remained a favourite among drinkers who appreciate a well-balanced pint, and their resurgence in the craft beer world is a clear indication of their timeless appeal. These are beers that have been a part of British pub culture for many, many years, offering a reliable alternative to lighter lagers and more aggressively hopped ales. Now, the modern craft beer lover can enjoy that same universally appealing beer, a beer for every occasion.

Drift is more than just a beer; it’s a reminder of those classic beers and brewing techniques from years gone by. It’s about the simple pleasure of a perfectly poured easy-going pint, enjoyed in a classic pub. Whether you’re a long-time ale lover or a craft beer enthusiast looking for something a little more traditional, Drift is your beer for a taste of traditional.

So next time you’re in the mood for a beer with depth, tradition, and just a hint of modern craft innovation, let yourself Drift.
